Where does the secret of coffee lie? Is it in the land, the hands of those who cultivate it, the roaster, the barista?
The story of coffee is not neoteric. It has always been the inextricable journey of two protagonists: the coffee plantation and those who cultivate it.
The process of coffee itself is pure alchemy. Machines are built to extract its elixir. Beans are roasted in accord with secret recipes. Designer coffee houses precisely monitor the water temperature and grind. But it’s a journey that always begins and ends in the same place, in someone’s hands.
In 2015, in collaboration with La Marzocco and Leica, I traveled twice to Tanzania into the Rift Valley to the Songwa Coffee plantation where the metamorphosis of a single bean begins.
